Players control the genetically engineered assassin Agent 47 from a third-person perspective as he carries out contract killings across large, open-ended sandbox levels set in locations around the globe including Paris, Italy, Morocco, Bangkok, Colorado, and Japan. Each level presents numerous approaches to eliminating targets, from disguises and environmental manipulation to staged accidents and direct confrontation.

The game features a classless system where players unlock new tools, starting locations, and gear by completing challenges. Originally released episodically, the game was later delisted from standalone sale in 2023 when IO Interactive consolidated the trilogy under a single package titled Hitman: World of Assassination.
